Sioux Falls, SD – A powerful Arctic blast is set to sweep through South Dakota starting Saturday, November 30, bringing dangerously cold air, strong winds, and icy roads through the first week of December.

According to the National Weather Service, a strong Arctic front will surge south from Canada, dropping temperatures well below zero across much of the state. The Climate Prediction Center forecasts a 70–85% chance of below-normal temperatures, with overnight lows reaching -5°F to -15°F in northern counties and wind chills near -30°F in some areas.

Drivers traveling along I-90 and I-29 should prepare for whiteout conditions, drifting snow, and dangerously slick roads, particularly Sunday through Tuesday. The South Dakota Department of Transportation warns motorists to use caution and avoid unnecessary travel as blowing snow and freezing wind gusts create treacherous driving conditions.

This Arctic outbreak marks one of the most severe early-season cold snaps in recent years, extending across the Plains and Upper Midwest. Forecasters expect the cold pattern to persist into mid-December before temperatures begin to moderate slightly.

Residents are advised to dress in layers, check heating systems, and bring pets indoors as wind chills dip to life-threatening levels. Farmers and ranchers should also take precautions to protect livestock from exposure.
