Sioux Falls, SD – The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls is warning residents of high fire danger on Sunday, October 26, as strong winds and dry conditions set the stage for a potentially hazardous afternoon and evening.

According to the NWS, south-southeast winds will gust between 25 and 40 MPH from midday through sunset Sunday. The strongest winds are forecast west of Highway 281, where dry fuels could ignite easily if exposed to sparks or burning debris.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and use caution with farm and outdoor equipment, as any fire that starts could spread rapidly in the dry grass and crop residue.

The fire danger will be highest from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT, with the central and south-central portions of South Dakota — including areas near Huron, Chamberlain, and Mitchell — facing the most elevated risk.

Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and follow local fire safety restrictions throughout the day.
