Sioux Falls, SD – Snow sweeps across the city this morning like a curtain, softening sounds and covering roads in a fast-building layer of white. Visibility is shrinking as the first significant December snowfall grips eastern South Dakota, reducing travel speeds and turning highways slick.

A Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls remains in effect until 9 PM tonight, warning of 2 to 5 inches of total accumulation and gusts up to 20 mph. The heaviest snow is expected midmorning through early afternoon, with the most difficult travel along I-29 and Highway 42, especially on bridges and elevated surfaces prone to freezing.

Temperatures will stay near the low 20s today, meaning every flake sticks. Even minor accumulation will compact quickly under tires, creating a glaze of ice beneath the fresh snow. Plows are active across the metro, but visibility and traction remain poor — avoid unnecessary travel until later tonight if possible.

By Sunday, skies clear and sunshine returns, though temperatures will struggle to reach the teens, keeping surfaces frozen. Light snow chances return Tuesday as a weak clipper skirts the region, part of a larger pattern likely to bring additional snow to the Upper Midwest from Dec. 11–17 — something holiday travelers should watch closely.
