Sioux Falls, SD – A mix of warm temperatures, gusty winds, and low humidity is increasing fire risks across South Dakota this week. Residents should prepare for changing conditions, including strong winds and elevated fire hazards through Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, gusty winds will develop today and continue into the weekend. The strongest winds are expected Thursday night into Friday, bringing gusts up to 30 mph. These conditions, combined with dry air, will create an elevated fire danger, particularly west of the James River.
Fog is expected early Wednesday morning, especially along Highway 14 and in parts of northwest Iowa, where visibility could drop to a quarter of a mile before clearing. Wednesday’s temperatures will reach the upper 40s with light winds, while Thursday brings a high of 52°F and increasing gusts.
By Friday, breezy conditions and highs near 59°F will persist, with blustery winds continuing into the night. The weekend cools slightly, with highs in the 40s on Saturday and Sunday under mostly sunny skies.
Residents should remain cautious of fire hazards and avoid outdoor burning. Stay updated on weather alerts and prepare for shifting conditions through the week.
