Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Funnel clouds are possible across southern South Dakota, northeast Nebraska, and northwest Iowa through Wednesday evening as isolated thunderstorms continue to form.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, conditions are favorable for the development of weak funnel clouds with any showers or storms that pop up this afternoon and early evening. These funnel clouds are typically short-lived, do not touch down, and rarely cause damage—but they can be startling and potentially dangerous.

A funnel cloud was reported just north of Lake Andes around 12:20 p.m., and similar sightings are possible in counties including Minnehaha, Yankton, Plymouth, and Woodbury. Residents near Sioux Falls, Vermillion, and Cherokee should be especially alert through 8 p.m.

While these funnels usually remain aloft, if you see one forming nearby and feel threatened, seek shelter indoors immediately—preferably in a basement or small interior room away from windows.

This type of atmospheric setup is common in late summer when low-level moisture and instability are present, but tornado formation is not expected at this time.

Stay tuned for updates, as conditions could change quickly this evening.
