Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Residents across eastern South Dakota face a dual weather threat this afternoon as weak funnel clouds and flash flooding are possible along and north of I-90, with conditions continuing through Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, landspouts and brief funnel clouds may develop today due to strong updrafts interacting with a boundary currently draped across the region. These weak tornadoes—often short-lived and difficult to detect by radar—can still cause localized damage and pose a danger to life and property. The most likely timing is this afternoon into early evening.

A Flood Watch also takes effect at 4 p.m. and lasts through Thursday, with localized rainfall amounts exceeding 4 inches possible. Urban areas like Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton, along with smaller communities near creeks and low-lying spots, may see flash flooding, especially in poor drainage zones. River rises into the Minor or Moderate category are possible on mainstem rivers, depending on where heavy rainfall occurs.

Drivers should avoid flooded roads, especially in rural areas and near underpasses. Residents are urged to monitor alerts and move to shelter if a funnel is spotted nearby.

More rainfall is expected overnight, with additional advisories likely through Thursday.
