Sioux Falls, SD – Eastern South Dakota will see several rounds of changing weather early this week, starting with fog Monday morning, rain during the day, a brief lull Monday night, and more rain Tuesday that transitions to light snow, according to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.

According to the agency, another round of fog is expected early Monday, reducing visibility across the region before gradually lifting as rain spreads in later in the morning and afternoon. Rain chances range between 40% and 70% across much of southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota.

Precipitation tapers off Monday night before rain restarts Tuesday morning. As colder air arrives Tuesday afternoon and evening, the rain is forecast to transition to a dusting of snow, mainly along and north of U.S. Highway 14. Locations including Brookings, Huron, De Smet, Madison, and Lake Andes stand the best chance for light snow accumulation.

Current projections show only a few hundredths of an inch of additional precipitation for most areas Monday and Tuesday, with slightly higher totals possible closer to the Minnesota border. Snow amounts are expected to remain minor, though slick spots may develop overnight Tuesday as temperatures fall.

The National Weather Service warns of travel impacts early Monday due to fog and again Tuesday evening where rain changes to snow. Drivers should slow down and be prepared for reduced visibility and potentially slippery roads north of Highway 14.

More updates are expected Monday as forecasters refine the timing of the rain-to-snow transition.
