Sioux Falls, SD – A warm, breezy weekend is on tap across South Dakota, but with it comes a heightened risk of wildfires as wind speeds pick up significantly through Sunday night.

According to the US National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, patchy dense fog Friday morning is expected to lift by mid-morning, giving way to clear skies and mild conditions with highs between 61°F and 71°F. However, beginning Saturday, wind gusts and above-normal temperatures will drive elevated to potentially critical fire weather conditions statewide.

Saturday’s forecast includes highs in the mid-70s to low 80s, with Sunday slightly cooler but still windy. Winds will increase both days, particularly during the afternoon hours, raising concern for rapid fire spread in dry areas.

Isolated thunderstorms may develop late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, but widespread precipitation is not expected. Rain chances remain low through the weekend, with only spotty showers forecast into Monday.

Residents are advised to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose items, and stay alert to any fire weather warnings. Conditions are expected to improve Monday as temperatures drop slightly and wind speeds decrease.

This fire risk alert remains in effect through late Sunday evening.
