Sioux Falls, SD — Subzero temperatures continue to grip Sioux Falls and surrounding areas, with wind chills plummeting below -40°F through Tuesday noon. Residents face dangerously cold conditions, but relief is expected by the weekend as temperatures begin to climb.
According to the National Weather Service, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 12 p.m. Tuesday, with wind chills as low as -38°F in parts of southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota. A Cold Weather Advisory will follow from midnight Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday, with wind chills around -35°F.
Residents are advised to limit time outdoors, as frostbite can occur on exposed skin in under 10 minutes. Wear layers, including hats and gloves, and keep pets indoors.
Northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph will add to the chill. By Thursday, temperatures are expected to rise to 7°F, reaching the mid-30s by Saturday and climbing to the 50s by Monday. Travelers on I-29 and other local roads should remain cautious of icy conditions through midweek.
