Watertown, S.D. – Drivers in northeast South Dakota are waking up to dangerously low visibility this morning as dense fog blankets the region through 10 a.m. Thursday, making travel hazardous across key roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect for Codington, Roberts, Day, Marshall, Grant, Hamlin, and Deuel counties. Visibility has dropped to a quarter-mile or less in many areas, including along U.S. Highway 212 through Watertown and Milbank, as well as Highway 12 through Webster and Sisseton.

Travelers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra space between vehicles. The fog has already reduced visibility along rural roads and city streets alike, with local law enforcement advising caution during the morning commute. Conditions may fluctuate rapidly, especially in low-lying areas and near bodies of water.

Residents in Clear Lake, Hayti, and surrounding towns should delay non-essential travel if possible. With school and work traffic increasing after sunrise, road safety remains a top concern.

The advisory is expected to expire by 10 a.m., but lingering patches of fog may persist in shaded or sheltered areas. Drivers should remain alert for changing conditions throughout the morning.
