Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Bitterly cold air combined with strong winds is creating dangerous wind chill conditions across eastern South Dakota, with exposure risks increasing sharply through tonight and into Monday morning. Residents are being urged to limit time outdoors as conditions turn potentially dangerous.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, wind chill values today are expected to range from 10 to 20 degrees below zero, even during daylight hours. Conditions worsen Sunday night into Monday morning, when wind chills are forecast to fall between 15 and 25 below zero across much of the region, including the Sioux Falls metro.
The coldest conditions are expected overnight, especially in open and rural areas where winds remain steady. Cities including Brookings, Huron, Madison, Mitchell, Yankton, and Watertown are all expected to see prolonged periods of subzero wind chills. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 20 to 30 minutes under these conditions.
Travelers, outdoor workers, and anyone attending early morning activities should dress in multiple warm layers, fully cover exposed skin, and take frequent breaks indoors. Pets should be brought inside, and livestock owners are encouraged to provide shelter and unfrozen water.
While temperatures slowly moderate later Monday, dangerously cold wind chills remain possible into the morning hours. Residents should continue monitoring updates, as cold weather advisories or warnings may remain in effect until conditions improve.
