Sioux Falls, SD – A strong cold front will sweep through South Dakota on Friday, bringing dangerous conditions, including subzero temperatures and wind chills as low as -35°F. The National Weather Service warns residents to prepare for sharp drops in temperature by Friday afternoon, particularly along I-29 and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts could reach up to 45 mph, creating hazardous driving conditions. Blustery weather will continue into Saturday, with lows dropping to -8°F and daytime highs struggling to reach 2°F. Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure and ensure pets have adequate shelter. Frostbite can occur in under 10 minutes with these wind chills.

Saturday night into Sunday will remain bitterly cold, with temperatures plunging further. Sunday’s high will hover near 2°F, with nighttime lows dipping to -11°F. Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, will be equally frigid, with highs only reaching 1°F.

While skies will stay mostly clear, conditions will feel brutal due to persistent wind. Those traveling should keep emergency kits in their vehicles and check road conditions before departing. Local authorities encourage staying off the roads unless necessary, as icy patches could form overnight.

The cold snap is expected to persist into early next week. With temperatures this low, proper precautions are crucial to staying safe. Check local forecasts regularly for updates and advisories.
