Rapid City, S.D. – Hurricane-force wind gusts and a late-season frost are expected to impact much of western South Dakota and parts of northeastern Wyoming through early Saturday, creating hazardous travel and agricultural risks.
According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. MDT Friday, with sustained northwest winds of 40 to 55 mph and gusts up to 75 mph reported across Butte, Harding, Meade, and Perkins counties. In Crook County, Wyoming, gusts could top 60 mph. A Frost Advisory will follow from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. MDT Saturday, as temperatures dip to 33–35°F, enough to damage sensitive vegetation.
Drivers along U.S. Highways 85, 212, and 14 should expect blowing dust and debris. High-profile vehicles, including semis and RVs, are at particular risk for tipping or loss of control in gusty conditions. Outbuildings and signage could also suffer damage.
Residents in Belle Fourche, Lemmon, Faith, and Newcastle should take steps tonight to cover plants and secure loose outdoor items. Power outages are possible due to downed lines or damaged infrastructure.
Warnings remain in effect through Saturday morning. Additional advisories could be issued if temperatures fall below freezing.
