Sioux Falls, SD – Residents across eastern South Dakota should prepare for strong, gusty winds Thursday as a southerly flow builds overnight. The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls reports that wind gusts are expected to reach between 35 and 45 miles per hour Thursday morning and afternoon, with the strongest winds expected in central and southeastern parts of the state.

According to the National Weather Service, the breezy conditions will begin developing late Wednesday night and peak through midday Thursday. Locations such as Mitchell, Huron, and Sioux Falls may see the highest gusts before winds begin to ease by evening.

The agency also cautioned that elevated fire weather conditions are expected Thursday due to the combination of dry air and strong winds. Residents are urged to avoid burning, secure loose outdoor items, and use extra caution when driving high-profile vehicles, especially on open highways. Farmers and agricultural workers should be careful with harvesting equipment that could spark fires in dry fields.

By Thursday night, winds are expected to decrease gradually, offering calmer conditions heading into Friday.
