Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Drivers and residents north of I-90 should prepare for possible flash flooding today as heavy rain targets parts of eastern South Dakota through Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, persistent showers and thunderstorms will develop mainly along and north of Highway 14, bringing 1 to 3 inches of rain through late evening. Areas just south of Highway 14 may see lighter totals, generally under half an inch. The heaviest downpours are expected near Watertown, Brookings, and Marshall, Minnesota.

Roads like U.S. Highway 81 and I-29 could be impacted by ponding water, especially during evening commutes. Low-lying areas and poor drainage zones are most at risk. Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded roads and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.

This system marks the region’s first widespread heavy rain event of June and could lead to localized flooding, especially in fields and rural roads still saturated from recent showers.

Rain is expected to taper off overnight, but additional advisories may be issued if storm cells redevelop.
