Sioux Falls, SD – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of southeastern South Dakota and parts of northwestern Iowa on Saturday as a system brings widespread snow and gusty winds across the region.
According to the National Weather Service Sioux Falls, snow will develop from west to east through the morning, becoming heaviest in the afternoon along and east of Highway 81. Accumulations of 2–5 inches are expected for most areas, with localized pockets of 6 inches or more possible. Snowfall rates may reach up to 1 inch per hour at times, leading to reduced visibility and slick roads.
Winds from the east to northeast could gust between 20–25 mph, creating areas of blowing and drifting snow—particularly in open rural locations. Forecasters warn that travel may become hazardous Saturday afternoon and evening, with conditions improving early Sunday as snow tapers off.
Wind chills are also expected to dip to -15 to -20°F late Saturday night into Sunday morning, adding another layer of winter hazards for those traveling or working outdoors.
Motorists are advised to slow down, keep emergency kits in their vehicles, and monitor updated forecasts before heading out.
