Sioux Falls, S.D. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to sweep through southeastern South Dakota and surrounding states overnight, with wind gusts up to 70 mph and the possibility of isolated tornadoes threatening Sioux Falls, Brookings, and other communities through 9 a.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for parts of South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, and Nebraska until 9 a.m. CDT on May 15. The watch area includes cities such as Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Marshall, Worthington, and Storm Lake, with threats including damaging winds, large hail up to two inches in diameter, and a chance for a couple tornadoes.
Residents in Pipestone, Spencer, Madison, and Le Mars are advised to secure outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages. Motorists should avoid travel during peak storm periods, especially on I-90 and I-29 where visibility could drop rapidly in severe downpours or wind-blown debris.
With over 730,000 people, 413 schools, and 46 hospitals within the watch zone, emergency officials urge residents to monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts overnight and have a shelter plan ready.
