Sioux Falls, South Dakota – A round of isolated but intense thunderstorms could develop across eastern South Dakota between 4 and 9 p.m. Sunday, threatening outdoor plans with 60 mph wind gusts, quarter-sized hail, and brief downpours.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) is in place for areas east of the James River, stretching into northwestern Iowa and southwestern Minnesota. While coverage will be limited, any storm that forms may become briefly severe.

Cities including Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton should stay alert for fast-moving cells capable of producing damaging wind and hail. Outdoor events, particularly near the I-29 corridor, could be impacted during the early evening window. Residents are urged to monitor alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

This marks one of the first organized severe threats in July for the region, though conditions remain scattered. The Storm Prediction Center stresses that even low-end threats can turn dangerous quickly.

Storm chances taper off by late evening, but more updates could follow if additional activity develops overnight.
