Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Storms packing damaging wind and large hail could hammer eastern South Dakota late Tuesday, with Sioux Falls and nearby cities in the path.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, strong to severe thunderstorms are likely to develop after 5 p.m. Tuesday and continue into the evening. Some storms may produce wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail as large as 2 inches. Localized downpours could also trigger brief urban flooding. The most intense storms are expected along and south of I-90, spreading southeastward through the night.
Residents in Sioux Falls, Brookings, Yankton, and Vermillion should secure outdoor items, charge electronics, and monitor alerts. The risk of isolated severe storms remains highest until around midnight Tuesday. While Tuesday starts off dry and sunny, the weather will turn volatile by late afternoon.
As we move into the second half of the week, more showers and storms are possible — especially Thursday and Friday. While confidence is still low, additional severe weather may redevelop, particularly in southern South Dakota and northern Nebraska.
