South Dakota Storm Alert: Quarter-Sized Hail and 60 MPH Winds Possible Friday Afternoon

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Scattered thunderstorms will cross southeast South Dakota and neighboring states Friday, with the strongest storms developing west of Interstate 29 during the morning and shifting east through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, isolated severe storms could redevelop Friday afternoon along and southeast of a line from Vermillion, South Dakota, to Spencer, Iowa. Quarter-size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible, though the overall risk for widespread severe weather remains low.

Residents in northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, and northeast Nebraska should watch for brief downpours, gusty winds, and small hail, especially near Sioux Falls, Worthington, and Spencer. Travel along I-29 and I-90 could be briefly impacted by reduced visibility and slick conditions during heavier bursts of rain.

By Saturday, skies clear across the region, with sunny and cooler weather expected through early next week. Outdoor events and travel should see few weather disruptions after Friday night.

Storm chances end by late Friday evening, with no additional hazardous weather expected through Thursday.
