Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Hen egg-sized hail could batter parts of eastern South Dakota starting at 3 p.m. Monday, with scattered severe thunderstorms likely to impact the Sioux Falls region and communities along I-29 through 9 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, storms are expected to develop quickly ahead of a strong cold front, bringing the threat of very large hail—up to 2 inches in diameter—and damaging wind gusts over 70 mph. Residents in Brookings, Yankton, Mitchell, Watertown, and Huron face the highest risks, with isolated tornadoes also possible in some areas.

Drivers should avoid travel if possible, especially along I-29 and surrounding highways during the evening commute. Outdoor plans should be adjusted, and those with activities scheduled should stay close to sturdy shelter as storms will move rapidly and could intensify with little warning. Local emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor objects, charge devices, and monitor multiple sources for weather alerts.

This severe weather threat marks one of the strongest storm systems of the spring. Warnings remain in effect through Monday night, and additional alerts may follow if conditions worsen. Stay weather aware and be ready to take action if warnings are issued.
