Sioux Falls, SD – Dry, gusty winds and warm temperatures are creating a critical fire danger across South Dakota today, with a Red Flag Warning in effect for much of the region. By Friday, a strong storm system is expected to bring thunderstorms, high winds, and possible snow, impacting travel and outdoor plans.

According to the National Weather Service, today’s Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. due to low humidity and wind gusts up to 30 mph. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning as any fire that develops could spread rapidly.

Friday’s weather shift will bring scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon, with heavy rain possible. Winds will strengthen, reaching gusts up to 45 mph by Friday night. Late Friday into Saturday, temperatures will drop, and rain may transition into snow, especially along Interstate 29.

By Saturday morning, blustery conditions will continue with a high of 37°F. Some snow accumulation is possible, though amounts remain uncertain. Sunday offers a break with sunshine and a high near 44°F before another system moves in early next week.

Drivers should prepare for hazardous conditions on Friday night and Saturday, especially in open areas prone to strong winds. Stay updated on local forecasts and plan ahead for changing conditions.
