Sioux Falls, S.D. – Wildfire smoke drifting into eastern South Dakota is expected to cause hazy skies and lower air quality through Saturday evening, especially near Mitchell, Chamberlain, and Sioux Falls.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, elevated concentrations of surface-level smoke will build throughout the afternoon and evening, particularly in areas west of the James River and east of Interstate 29. Conditions are forecast to peak between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. CDT Saturday.

Cities like Brookings, Madison, and Yankton may experience reduced visibility and a distinct white or milky haze, driven by wildfire smoke trapped closer to the ground. The highest smoke densities—indicated in red and orange on NOAA’s HRRR model—could cause breathing difficulties for sensitive groups, including children, the elderly, and anyone with respiratory issues.

Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors, keep windows shut, and run air purifiers if available. Those traveling along I-90 and Highway 81 should stay alert for visibility changes this afternoon.

While most of the smoke is expected to thin out overnight, air quality issues could linger into early Sunday. Further updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
