Sioux Falls, South Dakota – South Dakotans should brace for hazy skies and breathing risks through Saturday as smoke from wildfires continues to blanket much of the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, surface smoke will persist across southeast South Dakota, northeast Nebraska, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota through late Saturday. Air quality will remain unhealthy at times, especially for sensitive groups, including children, seniors, and people with respiratory issues.
In Sioux Falls, visibility remains near 7 miles early Friday with calm winds and hazy skies. Temperatures will reach 76°F today, but air quality may limit outdoor activity. Overnight lows dip to 57°F under continued smoke coverage.
More southerly winds are expected to gradually clear the smoke by Sunday, but additional hazards could arrive with weekend thunderstorms. A 30% chance of showers and storms begins Saturday evening, especially near I-29, and lingers into Monday. Wind gusts may reach up to 20 mph, adding travel hazards in affected counties.
Residents should limit time outdoors, run air purifiers if available, and avoid strenuous activity during smoky periods. Drivers should use headlights during low visibility and keep windows closed.
