SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across southeast South Dakota and southwest Minnesota tonight, bringing damaging winds up to 65 mph and hail as large as half dollars.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the highest risk will be between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday. While isolated showers developed earlier in central South Dakota, forecasters say conditions will intensify after sunset with the potential for a few severe storms.

Communities including Sioux Falls, Yankton, Mitchell, and Worthington, Minn., are within the risk zone. Gusty winds could down tree limbs and power lines, while hail may damage vehicles and crops. Drivers on Interstates 29 and 90 should prepare for sudden visibility drops and slick road conditions during evening and overnight travel.

Residents are urged to monitor alerts, secure outdoor items, and have a plan to seek shelter if warnings are issued. The storms are expected to weaken toward daybreak Wednesday, but unsettled weather may continue midweek.

Warnings remain possible overnight as the system tracks east.
