Sioux Falls, S.D. – Strong thunderstorms could rattle much of South Dakota Sunday night through Monday evening, with the greatest threat west of the James River, where gusty winds and large hail are possible.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a round of severe thunderstorms may develop overnight Sunday, followed by another round Monday afternoon into the evening. Winds could gust up to 30 mph, especially west of I-29, as storms move through the state. Some cells may produce damaging wind gusts and hail up to one inch in diameter.

Cities including Mitchell, Huron, and Yankton are under the highest risk late Sunday into Monday. Sioux Falls and Brookings may also see strong storms, though the threat is lower east of I-29. Travel could be impacted, especially during the Monday evening commute. Residents are advised to monitor local alerts, charge devices, and avoid outdoor activities during storm periods.

This system marks one of the more significant severe weather threats of April, with temperatures rising into the mid-70s Monday ahead of a cold front. Conditions are expected to clear by Tuesday, with cooler highs in the 50s and sunshine returning.

Storm alerts may be upgraded; further watches or warnings are likely by Sunday afternoon.
