Sioux Falls, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms could hit south-central and southeast South Dakota late Wednesday evening, with the highest threat between 8 p.m. and midnight. Residents should prepare for strong winds up to 70 mph and hail potentially larger than half dollars.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the highest risk zones stretch from Chamberlain to Yankton, with a slight risk (Level 2) in south-central counties and a marginal risk (Level 1) further east toward Sioux Falls and Brookings. While tornado potential remains low, forecasters warn that damaging winds and large hail are the main hazards tonight.
Travel along Interstate 90 and Interstate 29 could be hazardous during the storm window. Outdoor events should wrap up early, and vehicles should be moved under cover to avoid hail damage. Residents are urged to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and keep mobile devices charged.
Storms are expected to move out of the region shortly after midnight, but additional updates will be issued if conditions change.
