Rapid City, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to hammer much of western and central South Dakota through 9 p.m. Wednesday, putting 26 counties— including Pennington, Meade, and Lyman— on alert for damaging winds, large hail, and dangerous lightning.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for counties stretching from the Black Hills east toward Tripp and Walworth, effective until 9 p.m. MDT. Officials warn of wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail that could reach golf ball size, with the strongest storms likely along I-90, U.S. 83, and U.S. 85.
Rapid City, Sturgis, Spearfish, and Pierre are all within the watch area. Power outages, downed trees, and hazardous travel conditions are possible, especially in open areas and along highways. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor local alerts. If you’re driving, pull over safely if heavy rain or hail reduces visibility.
This event follows a week of unsettled weather across the region—similar to the late June 2021 storm system that caused widespread wind damage.
Thunderstorm threats are expected to diminish by late evening, but more watches or warnings may be issued if storms redevelop overnight.
