Sioux Falls, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to erupt across central South Dakota beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, bringing damaging winds and large hail to the Highway 281 corridor and the James River Valley.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the strongest storms could pack wind gusts up to 65 mph, along with hail as large as half dollars. The primary threat zone stretches from Huron and Mitchell south to Yankton, with the storms expected to weaken as they move east toward the I-29 corridor by midnight.

Residents along and west of Highway 81 should remain weather-aware this evening. Outdoor events could be disrupted quickly, and shelters may be needed if warnings are issued. While tornadoes are not expected, the risk of isolated wind damage and hail is elevated.

Drivers are urged to avoid travel in storm zones during peak activity. Secure outdoor items, charge devices, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. This system marks one of the more intense thunderstorm threats for July so far in the region.

Storms are expected to exit the area overnight, but additional weather statements may follow if conditions worsen.
