Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Damaging winds up to 70 mph could sweep across southeast South Dakota beginning late Tuesday night as a line of strong to severe thunderstorms moves through the region. Areas west of US Highway 81 are expected to see the brunt of the impact, including a possible tornado risk and quarter-sized hail.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, storms are most likely between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday, with weakening expected toward dawn. However, isolated gusts near 60 mph may continue into early Wednesday. The primary threat is wind damage, though stronger cells within the line may also produce brief tornadoes and locally heavy rainfall.
Counties in a Level 2 “Slight Risk” include Yankton, Mitchell, and areas along and west of I-29. Scattered tree damage, power outages, and dangerous travel conditions are possible overnight. Residents should avoid unnecessary travel, charge devices, and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings.
Thunderstorm activity will diminish by 5 a.m., but additional watches may follow if the system slows. Stay alert for updates and warnings through the night.
