Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Strong thunderstorms could sweep across eastern South Dakota this afternoon, bringing golf ball-sized hail, 70 mph wind gusts, and even the potential for a tornado in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the greatest risk spans from 3 to 10 p.m. Monday as a cold front moves through the region. Scattered severe storms are possible across southeastern South Dakota and southwestern Minnesota, with Marshall, Brookings, and Worthington under the highest threat level (Level 3).

Residents in Sioux Falls, Yankton, and Mitchell may experience damaging winds and locally heavy rainfall if storms repeatedly track over the same location. Flash flooding is not widespread but remains possible, especially in areas receiving 1–2 inches of rain in a short timeframe.

Motorists are urged to stay off the roads during storms, and anyone with outdoor plans should stay weather-aware. Keep phones charged and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Take shelter indoors if conditions worsen suddenly.

Storms are expected to taper off late this evening, but additional updates or alerts may be issued if threats increase.
