Sioux Falls, SD — A significant rainstorm is poised to move through South Dakota starting Monday morning and continuing into Tuesday, with some areas at risk for heavy rainfall. Residents along the James River, including Mitchell and Chamberlain, could see rain totals exceeding three-quarters of an inch.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm is associated with a low-pressure system moving north from the Southern Plains. Rainfall amounts will depend on the system’s track, which remains uncertain. If it shifts westward, areas like Chamberlain may face higher totals, while an eastern path could limit accumulation.

Rainfall is expected to begin late Monday morning, intensify through the evening, and taper off by Tuesday morning. With rain potentially heavy at times, residents are advised to clear gutters, monitor storm drains, and exercise caution on roadways like I-90. Flooding risks remain low, but localized ponding in low-lying areas could occur.

Siouxland’s extended forecast includes sunny skies through Sunday with temperatures reaching 57°F before rain arrives Monday. Tuesday is expected to clear, bringing cooler highs in the upper 40s. Breezy conditions may follow as the system exits.

Prepare now by securing outdoor items, checking weather alerts, and planning for possible delays. Updates will be provided as forecasts sharpen.
