Sioux Falls, SD – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, and northwest Iowa through Thursday, as a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected to cause hazardous travel conditions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, precipitation will begin after midnight Wednesday night, reaching the Mitchell and Huron areas before sunrise and spreading east into the I-29 corridor by late morning. Snow totals of 1 to 3 inches are forecast, with the potential for 0.10 to 0.20 inches of ice accumulation, especially from Mitchell to Brookings and Madison.
Forecasters note that a narrow corridor of freezing rain or sleet could sharply impact local snow totals and make roads extremely slippery. Sioux Falls, Brookings, Worthington, and Storm Lake are expected to see the greatest mix of precipitation.
Travel is expected to be slow and difficult during both the morning and afternoon commutes, particularly on bridges and untreated surfaces. Motorists are urged to use caution, monitor weather.gov/fsd, and check 511 for real-time road updates.
