Rapid City, S.D. – A High Wind Watch has been issued for much of western and central South Dakota, with damaging winds expected from Thursday morning through Thursday evening. Northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph, with gusts reaching 60 to 70 mph, could cause significant disruptions across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, the watch covers areas including Harding, Perkins, Butte, Meade, Ziebach, Pennington, Haakon, Jackson, Bennett, Mellette, Todd, and Perkins counties. The strongest winds are anticipated between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. MDT on Thursday.
These high winds may damage roofs, small outbuildings, and signs. Power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Motorists traveling along Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 85 should exercise caution.
