Rapid City, SD – Residents across western and central South Dakota are being urged to prepare for dangerous winds Monday as a High Wind Watch goes into effect across much of the state.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Aberdeen and Rapid City, northwest winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph are possible from Monday morning through Monday evening, October 20, 2025.
The alert covers Harding, Perkins, Meade, Pennington, Ziebach, Stanley, Jones, Corson, Dewey, Haakon, Jackson, Bennett, Tripp, Todd, and surrounding counties — including cities such as Rapid City, Belle Fourche, Murdo, Fort Pierre, and Winner.
Meteorologists warn that high winds could damage roofs, move loose debris, topple signs and small structures, and cause power outages. Drivers, especially those operating semis or RVs, may face difficult travel on north-south highways due to strong crosswinds.
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, check emergency kits, and monitor forecast updates throughout the day. The NWS says additional High Wind Warnings may be issued if conditions intensify Monday morning.
