Sioux Falls, SD – Unseasonable heat surged across eastern South Dakota Friday, shattering temperature records and pushing highs into the upper 70s and low 80s, levels more typical of late spring than early season conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, several cities set new daily records. Sioux Falls reached 78 degrees, breaking the previous record of 73, while Sioux City climbed to 82 degrees. Huron hit 81, surpassing its old mark of 75, and Mitchell topped out at 83, beating its previous record of 77.

The warmth is not over yet. Another round of near-record or record-breaking temperatures is expected Saturday, with highs again pushing into the upper 70s and low 80s across much of eastern South Dakota, northwest Iowa, and southwest Minnesota.

This early-season heat may increase fire danger and catch some residents off guard. Officials urge people to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor burning, and be mindful of rapidly drying vegetation.

While the warm stretch continues through Saturday, changes are expected later in the weekend as cooler air begins to move in. Additional record challenges remain possible before temperatures trend closer to seasonal levels.
