Sioux Falls, S.D. – Dangerously high temperatures and the threat of severe thunderstorms are expected to collide across South Dakota Tuesday, creating hazardous conditions through the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, heat index values could reach between 100–107°F across southeastern South Dakota, with Extreme Heat Warnings in place for areas including Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Yankton. Heat-related illnesses may set in quickly, especially for those outdoors without access to air conditioning.
A Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) has been issued for severe storms Tuesday afternoon into early Wednesday. Large hail up to the size of golf balls and damaging wind gusts over 70 mph are possible. Though the tornado threat is low, it cannot be ruled out. Storms are expected to develop between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., pushing east-northeast into Minnesota and Iowa by overnight.
High heat combined with severe weather could strain utilities and pose a risk to vulnerable populations. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and monitor weather alerts. Check on elderly neighbors and ensure pets have access to water and shade.
Warnings remain in effect through early Wednesday, with updates likely as conditions evolve.
