Sioux Falls, S.D. – Dangerous heat and humidity will grip much of South Dakota today, creating potentially hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Residents can expect seasonally hot temperatures from the upper 80s to mid-90s, but high humidity will push the heat index even higher, making it tough for bodies to cool off.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Heat Advisory covers nearly all of eastern South Dakota and stretches into northwest Iowa. Dew points in the mid and upper 70s are forecast, and the combination of heat and humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for people working outside, athletes, and anyone without reliable air conditioning.
Cities including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell, Yankton, and Worthington are all under the advisory. Officials urge residents to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and take frequent breaks if working outside. The highest risk for heat illness is during the late afternoon and early evening, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly and young children.
This is the first major humidity event of the summer for many in the region, and conditions are expected to remain uncomfortable until at least 8 p.m. Additional advisories could be issued if heat and humidity persist into Wednesday.
