South Dakota – A severe heat wave is set to hit several parts of South Dakota on Monday, with heat index values climbing as high as 105°F. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for multiple counties, urging residents to take precautions as dangerously hot temperatures combine with high humidity.

According to the National Weather Service, the advisory will be in effect from noon until 8 p.m. CDT Monday for counties including Mellette, Todd, and Tripp. Residents in cities like Winner, Rosebud, and Mission should prepare for heat index values of up to 104°F, which could lead to heat illnesses if proper precautions aren’t taken.

In addition, an advisory for areas in the central part of the state, including Hughes, Lyman, and Stanley counties, has been issued. This advisory, which runs from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. CDT Monday, will affect cities like Pierre and Fort Pierre. The heat index here could reach 105°F, posing a significant health risk to vulnerable populations.

Health officials recommend staying in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours. Those working outside should schedule regular breaks in shaded or cool areas.

With extreme temperatures expected through Monday evening, the heat advisory could be extended if conditions worsen.
