Pierre, S.D. – Flooding continues across parts of central South Dakota after days of heavy rain left creeks, rivers, and fields swelled beyond their banks, with warnings now extended through Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, between 2 and 5 inches of rain fell across Jones and Stanley counties over the past 72 hours, leading to widespread standing water. Emergency management officials reported flooded roads near Pierre, Fort Pierre, Hayes, and Mission Ridge, along with high water around Lake Sharpe and southern Lake Oahe.

Travel remains hazardous in these areas, as water covers stretches of rural roadways. Authorities warn drivers not to attempt to cross flooded routes, noting that most flood-related deaths happen in vehicles. Communities like Wendte, Van Metre, and Chantier Creek Recreation Area are also seeing impacts.

In eastern South Dakota, the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls said the Big Sioux River near Bruce remains above flood stage at 8.8 feet as of Friday morning. Agricultural land along the right bank has already seen water spread nearly a quarter mile. The warning there will stay in effect until further notice.

Residents are urged to avoid flooded areas, monitor river levels, and prepare for continued impacts through the weekend.
