Sioux Falls, S.D. – Rivers across eastern South Dakota remain swollen Sunday night as flood warnings continue for the James and Big Sioux Rivers, with water spilling into farmland and threatening rural roads.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the James River near Forestburg is expected to crest near 12.5 feet early Tuesday morning before slowly receding below flood stage by Friday. At this level, several county and township roads may become impassable, and significant portions of the floodplain are under water.
In Brookings County, the Big Sioux River near Bruce measured 8.8 feet Sunday evening, remaining above the 8-foot flood stage. Agricultural land up to a quarter mile from the banks is affected. Farther north near Estelline, the river stood at 1645 feet, just above flood stage, with widespread farmland flooding ongoing. No end date has been provided for either location.
Officials urge residents to avoid flooded roadways, especially after dark, when water depth is harder to judge. “Turn around, don’t drown,” the National Weather Service warned, noting that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles.
Warnings remain in effect until further notice for Brookings, Hamlin, and Sanborn Counties, with additional updates expected Monday evening.
