Sioux Falls, S.D. – Heavy overnight thunderstorms are triggering flash flooding in northeastern Beadle County, where water is already rising on roads and low-lying areas. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning late Thursday night, in effect until 5:30 a.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, Doppler radar and local gauges reported between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain across the warned area by 11:30 p.m., with rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour. Another 1 to 3 inches could fall overnight, increasing the risk of dangerous flooding.

The towns of Iroquois and Yale are among the communities most at risk. Flooding may impact small creeks, drainage ditches, and urban streets, making travel hazardous. Residents are urged to avoid driving through high water, especially at night when flooded roads are more difficult to recognize.

Emergency officials stress the importance of turning around when encountering barricades or flooded intersections. Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles, and even shallow water can sweep away cars.

The Flash Flood Warning remains in effect through early Friday morning, and additional alerts may be issued if heavy rainfall persists.
