Aberdeen, SD – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for northeastern and central South Dakota, in effect from 1 PM to 7 PM CDT today. The warning highlights increased fire danger due to strong winds and low humidity across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, winds will reach 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 15 to 25 percent, creating conditions that could lead to rapid fire spread if a fire ignites.

The affected counties include Roberts, Faulk, Spink, Clark, Codington, Grant, Hamlin, Deuel, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman, Buffalo, McPherson, Brown, Marshall, Edmunds, and Day. Residents in these areas are advised to avoid outdoor burning and exercise caution with any potential ignition sources such as machinery, cigarettes, and campfires.

The National Weather Service warns that any fires that start could become difficult to control due to the dry and windy conditions. Fire departments and emergency responders across the state are on high alert.

Residents are urged to stay informed, follow local advisories, and report any signs of wildfire immediately. The Red Flag Warning will expire at 7 PM CDT unless extended by authorities.
