Rapid City, SD – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of western South Dakota from noon to 7 p.m. MDT on Sunday due to critical fire weather conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, the affected areas include the Southern Black Hills, Fall River County, Northern and Eastern Foot Hills, Custer County Plains, Pine Ridge Area, Butte County, West Central Plains, Ziebach County, Haakon County, the Badlands Area, and Bennett County. Southwest winds are expected to range from 10 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. Far southwestern South Dakota could see gusts as high as 45 mph.
Relative humidity levels will drop as low as 15 percent, creating an environment conducive to rapid fire spread. The combination of dry fuels, gusty winds, and low humidity significantly increases fire risk across the region.
Residents are urged to take precautions, including avoiding outdoor burning and securing flammable materials. Fire crews remain on high alert due to the heightened risk.
The Red Flag Warning replaces a previous Fire Weather Watch issued for the area. Authorities advise residents to remain vigilant and report any fire activity immediately to emergency services.
