Aberdeen, SD – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for south-central South Dakota, in effect from 10 a.m. CST (9 a.m. MST) to 6 p.m. CST (5 p.m. MST) today. The warning covers Stanley, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman, and Buffalo counties, where critical fire weather conditions are expected.
According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, strong northwest winds ranging from 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, combined with low relative humidity as low as 33 percent, create an elevated risk of rapid fire spread. Any fires that ignite under these conditions could become difficult to contain.
Residents are advised to avoid any activities that could spark a fire, such as outdoor burning or using equipment that generates sparks. Officials recommend having emergency fire plans in place and staying informed through local authorities.
A Red Flag Warning indicates that weather conditions are highly conducive to fire ignition and rapid spread. The public is urged to exercise caution and report any fires immediately to emergency services. The warning remains in effect until this evening, when conditions are expected to improve.
