Aberdeen, SD – A Red Flag Warning is in effect across North Central and Northeast South Dakota, as well as Central South Dakota, through Monday evening due to strong winds and low humidity levels, increasing fire danger across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, the warning is active from noon CDT (11 a.m. MST) until 7 p.m. CDT (6 p.m. MST) today and again on Monday. Affected areas include Corson, Campbell, McPherson, Brown, Walworth, Edmunds, Dewey, Potter, Faulk, and Spink counties, along with Stanley, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman, and Buffalo counties.
Wind speeds are expected to reach 25 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph on Monday. Relative humidity levels could drop as low as 18%, exacerbating fire conditions. Any fires that ignite are likely to spread quickly and become difficult to control.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and report any signs of fire immediately. The combination of high winds, warm temperatures, and dry conditions presents a serious wildfire threat. Residents should secure loose objects and take precautions to prevent accidental fires.
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are occurring or imminent. Stay updated with local weather alerts and follow safety guidelines to protect life and property.
