Aberdeen, SD – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for multiple regions in South Dakota, with critical fire conditions expected from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening. The National Weather Service in Aberdeen warns that strong winds and low humidity will increase wildfire risks across central and northeastern parts of the state.
According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas include Corson, Campbell, McPherson, Brown, Walworth, Edmunds, Dewey, Potter, Faulk, Spink, Stanley, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman, Buffalo, Marshall, and Day counties.
Winds are forecasted to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph in some areas. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 18 percent, creating an environment where fires can ignite and spread rapidly. The strongest winds are anticipated in north-central and northeast South Dakota, while central parts of the state will also experience elevated fire risks.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and exercise caution with potential ignition sources such as cigarettes and machinery. Fire crews are on high alert, and residents are encouraged to monitor updates and prepare for possible Red Flag Warnings.
The Fire Weather Watch remains in effect from Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening, with a second watch extending from Monday afternoon through Monday evening. Authorities advise the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent wildfires.
