Warm and windy weather conditions are expected to raise the risk of fire across Sioux Falls and surrounding South Dakota areas starting Wednesday. Residents along major routes like I-90 should prepare for potentially dangerous conditions through Thursday, possibly extending into Friday. Temperatures are expected to climb to 80 degrees on Thursday, creating prime conditions for fast-spreading fires.
According to the US National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, strong winds will intensify Wednesday and Thursday, increasing the fire threat. Areas near fields and dry vegetation, especially along I-29, are most vulnerable. While the immediate danger is from the fire, wind gusts could also cause disruptions on roadways, making travel hazardous for commuters and truckers.
A cool day Tuesday, with highs in the 50s, provides a temporary reprieve. However, by Wednesday, temperatures will rise to the 60s and 70s. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph are forecast for both Wednesday and Thursday, driving up fire risks in these dry conditions.
Rain may arrive Friday night into Saturday, but it’s expected to bring only small chances of relief. Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose outdoor items, and stay updated on local alerts. Any fire that breaks out under these conditions could spread rapidly.
