Sioux Falls, SD – Fire danger is escalating quickly across South Dakota, with conditions becoming extreme this weekend and any spark capable of spreading rapidly across dry grasslands.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, near-critical fire conditions are already in place Wednesday and Thursday, but the خطر intensifies Friday as humidity drops below 25 percent and wind gusts exceed 25 mph. By Saturday and Sunday, conditions become extremely critical, with humidity falling below 20 percent and winds increasing beyond 35 mph.

The highest concern stretches across eastern South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Mitchell, and Yankton, where dry fuels and persistent winds create an environment primed for fast-moving wildfires. Rural areas and open fields will be especially vulnerable.

Officials urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning and any activity that could generate sparks, including welding or driving over dry grass. Fire crews warn that containment could become difficult if multiple fires ignite under these conditions.

Travelers on I-29 and I-90 should be alert for sudden smoke and reduced visibility if fires develop and shift with the wind.

These dangerous conditions persist through the weekend, and additional fire weather warnings or restrictions are likely as the pattern continues with little to no rainfall.
