Sioux Falls, SD – Fires could spread out of control within minutes across southeastern South Dakota this afternoon, as strong winds and extremely dry air combine to create critical fire conditions through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, the most dangerous window runs from noon until 7 p.m. Sunday, with west winds gusting up to 35 mph and relative humidity dropping as low as 17%. The highest risk is along and west of Interstate 29 and south of South Dakota Highway 34, including areas near Sioux Falls, Yankton, and Vermillion.

These conditions mean any spark—whether from equipment, vehicles, or outdoor burning—can ignite fast-moving grass or crop fires. Open areas along I-29 and rural roadways are especially vulnerable, where winds can quickly push flames across fields and into nearby structures.

Northern Nebraska is also included in this elevated risk zone, with similar dry fuels and gusty winds expected throughout the afternoon. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and report any signs of smoke immediately.

Conditions will begin to improve after sunset as winds ease and humidity recovers, but fire concerns may return with continued dry weather this week.
